Hubspot Website Grader and Google Analytics issues

Posted November 21st, 2009 by Renee

I've been working on building my website optimization and improving my website grade through Hubspot Website Grader. About a month ago, I hired a company to create a blog and integrate it with my website. They turned my website into a Wordpress site with a blog. Since then, Google Analytics hasn't been reporting visitors to my site, and Hubspot's website grader doesn't seem to be picking up CMS changes I've made. Despite that, my grade is slowly going up. However, it's frustrating that I'm doing the things Hubspot is recommending but they don't seem to recognize that I've done them the next time I get a report generated. Any ideas on what's happening??

 Hi Renee,

I have to agree that it seems that Google Analytics code is not on your pages. You have to ask the company that created the blog and integrated it with your website to put this code on all of your website/blog pages.

Regarding the Hubspot website grader I have seen some cases in which it is not recognizing the blog. It depends on what is the link to your blog. If you use something like blog.yourdomain.com or yourdomain.com/blog it is easier to detect the blog then it is in the case you have something like www.yourdomain.com/6735/

If you post a link to your site here I will have a look and I'll be able to give you some solution for your problems.

Best regards,

Adrian

 Hi Renee,

On the surface, it sounds like the Google Analytics tracking code is not being inserted correctly into your new site's pages or blog posts). Google offers some help with confirming this: Where can I find my tracking code from within my Google Analytics account?

Note: this Google help example only mentions using the Google Chrome browser for verifying the tracking code in your web pages. If you use another browser (like IE or Firefox) then you can just right-click on any of your site's page and choose "view source" (or "view page source"). This will open up the underlying page source code in text view.

Here are some potential Google Analytics issues:

(1). You find no Google Analytics tracking code in your new site - so you will obviously need to insert it in. There are some good Wordpress plugins that make this process quite painless. I personally use the Google Analyticator Plugin. If this is something outside of your element then feel free to contact me directly through this site. I can certainly help you get this setup. Or feel free to contact your original developers.

(2). The Google Analytics Code is incorrect/invalid - This could be due to a number of factors like developer error or an issue with an existing Wordpress plugin that you may be using. You would need to compare the original tracking code that Google provides you (within your Google analytics account) with what you actually see in your site's code (via "view page source"). The Google help example above touches on this.

(3). The incorrect Google Account ID is being referenced - again, the Google help example above touches on this. You would need to verify your account ID for your new website (within your Google Analytics account) with what you see in your site's underlying code (again, via "view page source").

As for your second issue, I'm not quite certain what you are specifically referring to with "website grader not picking up CMS changes". I'll assume that this means any new blog posts or any new content that you are creating via Wordpress (i.e. website grader is not finding your blog). This is certainly trickier to diagnose without knowing your site's (url) address. If you are comfortable sharing this then others may be able to help you optimize your new site.

I wish you the best with your optimization!

Hi Scott,

Thanks so much for your comments. I really appreciate them! I have forwarded this e-mail to the developers and hope the problem can be rectified. I suspected it was the case and was trying to figure out how to fix it myself, but wasn't having much luck. I'll try the Google Analycator too.

I may take you up on your offer if the problem's not fixed though!! Thank you!

:) Renee

Great to hear your moving forward with your analytics issue Renee. I hope your developers can get you up and analyzing real soon. Feel free to contact me directly anytime. My background is actually software development so I'm quite comfortable on the technical side of things.

As for your website grader issues...is there anything specific that you feel is not being recognized? Is it SEO related (on-page or off-page)? Or perhaps content related (e.g. blog analysis)?

Be well!
