Localized Twitter
Posted July 27th, 2009 by Deb Ward
Is there a good way to set up a small busines for a localized geographic area for Twitter? We don't want tweets going global for services that are only offered locally.
Thanks.... Deb Ward

Why don't you try something else?

Hi Deb,
why don't you try to put your location in your Twitter name? In this way people will now/figure out that the messages you send are related with that location. The messages will go globally but most of your followers may be the ones that are in your area.
Best regards,
Adrian
What's the drawback?

Hi Deb,
As other folks have pointed out, it's not easy to do what you're talking about.
In fact, I'm not sure it's worth worrying about targeting your tweets to a specific geography -- except that you should include the specific geographic names in your Twitter bio and location. It also makes sense to include place names in your Tweets frequently.
Simply by doing these things, you'll show up on local searches. For example, I show up on this Twitter Grader search for Cambridge, MA, because that's the "location" I have in my Twitter bio: http://twitter.grader.com/index.php?Action=TwitterUsersByLocation&City=CAMBRIDGE&State=MA&Country=US

You can't really target

You can't really target location with your tweets. They will be visible to anyone following you or anyone searching for anything you say via twitter search. What you CAN do and I personally wouldn't do it is protect your tweets. This way, the tweets will only be seen by people you authorize to see them.

Go to wefollow.com and type in the city or cities you are interested in. What will happen then is you will have people in those cities trying to follow you - you and choose who you want to follow.
