Pity the poor CEO in today's media world. UberCEO recently did a study with the headline "It's Official: Fortune 100 CEOs Are Social Media Slackers." It goes on to analyze the social-media habits of CEOs at large companies and concluded, shockingly, that they don't use social media much.

Honestly, I haven't given much thought to why a CEO would not want to blog. I understand the logic behind the arguments but I would think an open and wise CEO would understand the implications of an update or a tweet. However, this article has opened me up to a new perspective on the disadvantages if unthoughtful social media participation.

I think it is important to note that most CEOs are considered "digital immigrants." They, supposedly, represent a group of people accustomed to a partcular way of marketing (and communication, for that matter) and need to adapt to new social networking trends. In this context, they have a different vision for privacy and public information than that of younger web-savvy individuals. Maybe that has to be taken into account as well?

Digital immigrants. I have not heard that term before but it makes sense. There were presuppositions in the way some of the questions were framed in that article. Why the emphasis on personal profiles and fear of potential friending denied? I'd like to hear from someone who wholeheartedly agrees with this article but I'm not sure we'll find them on this forum. Maybe? Time will tell. Any takers?
